US Denies Plot with Israel to Destabilize Hamas Government

14 February 2006

The United States is denying it is in secret talks with Israel on ways to destabilize a Hamas-led Palestinian government.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack, reacting to a report in Tuesday's New York Times, says there is no plan or plot to bring about the ouster of Hamas. He says the conversations the U.S. is having with Israel are the same as it is having with other members of the international community and that they are transparent.

McCormack added it is up to Hamas to meet international demands and renounce violence, recognize Israel's right to exist, and abide by existing agreements between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

The Times reports the U.S. and Israel are planning to starve the Hamas-led government of money until it becomes necessary for the Palestinian Authority to call new elections.

Hamas condemned the reported interference, saying the U.S. should respect the Palestinians' democratic process.
