
Roadside bombs, caches found in central Iraq

ISKANDARIYAH, Iraq (Army News Service, Feb. 10, 2006) – Iraqi Army and coalition forces discovered three large roadside bombs, killed two terrorist suspects and captured 12 others during patrols and raids south of Baghdad this week.
Iraqi Army soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 4th Brigade, 8th Iraqi Division, along with U.S. Soldiers from 2/8th Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, found the first roadside bomb Feb. 7 in Iskandariyah, located about 25 south of Baghdad. The bomb consisted of four 82mm rounds, one 155mm round and three rockets near Iskandariyah.
The second roadside bomb, discovered near the same area, consisted of four 82mm rounds, one 155mm round, three rockets and 17 75mm rounds.
An Iraqi explosive ordnance disposal team dismantled both bombs and transported the materials to a local Iraqi police station for detonation.
Soldiers from 1/67th Armor, 2nd BCT, along with Iraqi Army soldiers from 1st Bn., 4th Bde., 8th Iraqi Army Div., discovered a third roadside bomb in Jurf-El Saker. The bomb was made up of two 155mm rounds, two fuel cans, one 100mm round, one 120mm round, one 130mm round, one nine-volt battery and blasting caps. A U.S. explosives ordnance disposal team conducted a controlled detonation at the site.
Raids take toll on terrorists
In Tikrit, two terrorists were killed and 12 others captured during a series of unrelated events north of Baghdad, Feb. 8.
An early morning raid near Baqubah by Iraqi troops supported by Task Force Band of Brothers Soldiers from the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 4ID captured six targeted suspects.
Two terrorists were killed in a failed attack against an Iraqi patrol north of Baqubah. The terrorist detonated an improvised explosive device as the patrol passed and then attacked with automatic weapons. Iraqi soldiers held the attackers at bay, as a patrol from the 3rd HBCT arrived, killing two of the gunmen. Three Iraqi soldiers were wounded in the fight and taken to an area hospital.
Soldiers from the 3rd HBCT also detained two men near Balad after a tip about an IED. The troops searched the area and found the IED and two spools of electrical wire. A search of the suspects’ home revealed more IED materials and other contraband.
Four men were detained near Samarra during a raid generated by a tip to Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team. The target of the raid, a well-known terrorist in the area, was captured along with three of his accomplices.
Safe house found in field
In Baghdad, Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 1st BCT, 10th Mountain Division, located a weapons cache near a house in a field while conducting a patrol west of Baghdad, Feb. 7.
The cache consisted of one anti-tank mine, homemade explosives, one 55-gallon plastic drum containing small bean bags filled with BB-sized crystals, six grenades, one dismantled Kalashnikov light machinegun, one 60mm mortar tube, two 60mm mortar systems and two rocket-propelled grenade rounds.
An EOD team was dispatched and cleared the unknown crystal agent.
