NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- A ceremonial ribbon cutting, highlighting Commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet Headquarter’s move to building D-29, took place Feb. 1 at Naval Station Norfolk.
Previously a furniture warehouse, building D-29 offers Vice Adm. Mark Fitzgerald, commander, 2nd Fleet, and his staff more room and capabilities than the old building.
“We were in a very small building, and we needed more room,” said Fitzgerald. “We needed the ability to do our exercises, augment the staff and have better communications equipment.”
Located at Naval Station Norfolk across from Pier E, building W-5 has only 18,500 square feet, where building D-29 offers approximately three times more room at 58,000 square feet.
According to Fitzgerald, the previous building had power distribution problems, which limited the capabilities of expanding communications and bringing the 2nd Fleet into the 21st century.
“The bottom line is we couldn’t be happier with this new building,” said Fitzgerald. “We see this as the way of the future, not only for 2nd Fleet, but also for the Navy in the operational environment.”
After three years of envisioning this new space, 2nd Fleet Headquarter’s staff is home.
