US Forces, Shi'ite Gunmen Clash in Baghdad
02 February 2006
A U.S. helicopter fired rockets into a Shi'ite neighborhood of Baghdad during a clash with gunmen early Thursday, and Iraqi officials say the airstrike killed a woman who was not involved in the fighting.
The U.S. military says the troops were pursuing "known Sunni Muslim terrorists" in the Sadr City area of the capital when gunmen on rooftops fired at the helicopter, and the aircraft returned fire.
In a separate incident Thursday, a roadside bomb blast in another part of Baghdad killed three Iraqi soldiers.
American spokesmen say a similar bomb south of the capital killed three U.S. troops, and a fourth American soldier died after his unit was attacked in southwestern Baghdad.
Gunmen kidnapped two Iraqi journalists, working for Sumariya TV, an Iraqi station as they were returning to their office in Baghdad.
And, in the northern city of Kirkuk, insurgents fired mortar rounds at an oil plant, triggering a fire but causing no casualties.
