23 people killed in fresh violence in Nepal

Nepal-Violence
At least 23 people, including 17 Maoist rebels, were killed in fresh violence in Nepal as security forces battled guerillas in central Makwanpur district.

The 17 rebels and six security personnel were killed Saturday night when Maoists, disguised as soldiers, attacked security forces in Makwanpur, a media report here today said quoting the state-run Nepal Television channel.

The clash was seen as a sequel to a guerilla attack on two police outposts in the Kathmandu Valley on Jan 14 that resulted in the death of 12 policemen.

The Makwanpur killings came around two weeks before elections to 58 municipalities.

Information and Communications Minister Shrsih Shumsher Rana, who is also the official spokesman, said the curbs would continue as long as government suspicion that the Maoists were acting in collusion with opposition parties to attack security forces continued.
