Twin Bombings in Baghdad Kill 22

19 January 2006

Iraqi officials say simultaneous blasts in Baghdad have killed at least 22 people and wounded 25 others in central Baghdad.

Officials say a suicide bomber killed 16 people in a cafe Thursday afternoon. A car bomb blast nearby killed at least six others.

Meanwhile, Iraqi officials said they have asked the U.S. military to release six of eight Iraqi women in detention. But they said the move is not related to the demand of kidnappers holding an American journalist.

Also today, an international team of election experts said Iraq's December general election was marked by some fraud. But the group said that overall, the violations were minor and will not affect the vote result.

Iraq's election commission is expected to issue final poll results in the next week.
