46 Million MOD Harrier technical support contract awarded to BAE Systems

06 Jan 2006

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has awarded a Joint Integrated Technical Support (JITS) contract valued at some 46 million to BAE Systems in support of the UK's Joint Force Harrier fleet that operates from both land and sea.

The JITS solution, designed by the Defence Logistics Organisation's Harrier integrated project team and BAE Systems, provides a technical query support service at a reduced cost to the MOD's Joint Force Harrier until 2014.

It will create a more responsive service to the Harrier bases at RAF Cottesmore and RAF Wittering, increasing BAE Systems technical capability at these sites. The closely integrated approach ensures military and industry technical expertise is better able to meet the changing military needs of the future.

A key enabler towards the success of JITS is the joint MoD and BAE Systems management team located at RAF Cottesmore which will bring a balanced view of operational and business needs.

Air Commodore Ian Thorne, Harrier IPT Leader said: "A joint management approach not only offers value for money to the taxpayer, it also enhances the service of the Harrier fleet through closer integration and control of the technical activities across RAF Cottesmore, RAF Wittering, DLO Wyton and BAE Systems sites."

2. The MOD is currently replacing the Sea Harrier FA2 on Royal Navy aircraft carriers with the Harrier GR Mk 9 aircraft. The Harrier GR Mk 9 will be flown by Joint Force Harrier pilots of Royal Navy and Royal Air Force squadrons and will provide the MOD with an improved ability to support worldwide operations.

3. The new Harrier Pulse-Line maintenance at RAF Cottesmore successfully moves Harrier GR7 aircraft in a 10-day pulse, through packaged maintenance activities, similar to industrial car plant manufacturing processes. Under this approach essential maintenance will be combined with upgrading the aircraft to the GR9 standard, which will result in the Harrier remaining in service until the arrival of the Future Joint Combat Aircraft in the next decade.
