Munition To Be Destroyed, Open House Cancelled

The U.S. Army is canceling a planned open house Jan. 9 in Edgewood, Md., to discuss a plan to transport a 75-mm mustard-filled munition from Dover Air Force Base, Del., to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. Instead, the Army will destroy the munition at Dover Air Base.

This process will still enable the Army to gain useful insights on the effects of sea water on munitions and chemical agents. The munition recently was recovered from a clamshell processing plant in Delaware and is being stored temporarily at Dover Air Force Base.

The munition will be destroyed using the U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency Non-Stockpile Chemical Materiel Project’s Explosive Destruction System from Aberdeen Proving Ground. This is a transportable, enclosed chamber used to treat recovered chemical munitions. It successfully destroyed two chemical munitions in Delaware in October 2004 and August 2005 in a safe and environmentally responsible manner
