Ten killed in terrorist attack on mosque
Multi-National Force-Iraq
TIKRIT, Iraq – Ten Iraqis, including an Iraqi policeman, were killed and four others wounded Dec. 23 in Balad Ruz in a suicide bombing.
All of the victims were at a Shia mosque, when the suicide bomber rode his bicycle into the courtyard of the mosque. The man was unable to get into the mosque itself and detonated the bomb he was wearing in the courtyard.
Emergency medical teams from the city and Soldiers from the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division provided medical treatment for the wounded. The Soldiers also secured the area as medical teams treated the victims.
Friday is the Holy Day in the Muslim faith and it’s likely the terrorist chose his place and time of attack on the Iraqi people to inflict the most damage. The attack did minor structural damage to the mosque itself, but completely destroyed the courtyard wall.
The attack comes one month after terrorists bombed two mosques in the city of Khanaqin, killing or injuring more than 150 innocent Iraqis.
