Top Croatian War Crimes Suspect Arrested in Spain
08 December 2005
Fugitive Croatian war crimes suspect General Ante Gotovina has been arrested in Spain.
The chief United Nations war crimes prosecutor, Carla del Ponte, announced the arrest while on a visit to Belgrade Thursday. She said authorities detained General Gotovina late Wednesday in the Spanish Canary Islands.
Spanish authorities say he will appear in court Thursday for a hearing on his transfer to The Hague.
General Gotovina has been at large since 2001 when the U.N. war crimes tribunal indicted him for his role in the deaths of civilians during a 1995 offensive through a Serb-held area of Croatia.
NATO and the European Union welcomed the arrest. The EU urged governments in Serbia and Montenegro and in Bosnia-Herzegovina to step up their efforts to find remaining war crimes suspects, including Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic.
