NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Rear Adm. Raymond Spicer, USS Enterprise (CVN 65) Strike Group Commander, welcomed USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55) and its crew into Carrier Strike Group 12 during a ceremony aboard the ship Dec. 5 at Naval Station Norfolk.

Leyte Gulf is to be the strike group’s air defense commander, a position formerly held by USS Gettysburg (CG 64).

While addressing the crew, Spicer said he expects Leyte Gulf to set the bar as the air defense commander.

“I just wanted to come over personally and say welcome to the strike group,” said Spicer. “I’m counting on Leyte Gulf to deliver to multi-warfare areas, and I’m counting on you as individuals to contribute to the strike group.”

Leyte Gulf was commissioned in 1987. It served in the Persian Gulf in 1991 in support of operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and moved its homeport to Norfolk, Va., in 1997.

The Enterprise Strike Group is scheduled to deploy in 2006.
