Weapons seized in cache discoveries

TIKRIT, Iraq – Five weapons caches were discovered over the weekend by Iraqi and U.S. troops throughout north-central Iraq.
The largest discovery was made Dec. 4 by a joint patrol of Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 1st Brigade, 5th Iraqi Army Division and Task Force 1-32 Cavalry from the 101st Airborne Division, in the village of Tamim, northwest of Kirkuk. The cache contained 27 artillery rounds, several hand grenades, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher with six rounds and an AK-47. The cache was taken to a secure site for destruction.
Another large discovery was made Saturday afternoon by Iraqi Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 4th Iraqi Army Division in the village of Tamim, northwest of Kirkuk. The cache contained 25 large mortar rounds and 50 detonating fuses. The cache was taken to a secure site for destruction.
Soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team discovered a 155mm artillery shell, a large mortar round and 3,000 rounds of anti-aircraft ammunition during a raid near Balad early on the morning of Dec. 4. The cache was destroyed by an explosive ordnance disposal team. Five suspected terrorist were detained at the site.
A TF 100-442 Infantry patrol discovered a small cache near Balad the morning of Dec. 4 containing two RPG launchers and two warheads. An EOD team destroyed the weapons at the site.
Two rockets were seized by Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division’s 1st BCT after a short firefight near Kirkuk Dec. 4. Terrorist gunmen attacked the patrol with small arms fire, but effective return fire caused them to break off the attack and run away. The rockets were discovered as the Soldiers searched for the gunmen. An EOD team destroyed the rockets in place. No Soldiers were injured in the fight.
