EADS supports airspace surveillance by the German Air Force

* Radar identification equipment in compliance with the latest standards increases security in Germany in good time for the World Cup
* International certification and introduction of interrogator systems

München-Unterschleißheim, 30 November 2005

The latest EADS technology will be used to improve airspace control over Germany. As the company announced on Wednesday, the EADS Defence Electronics Business Unit has been commissioned by the Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB – Bundesamt für Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung) in Koblenz to equip six long-range airspace surveillance radar systems of the German Air Force with the most modern identification devices. With the so-called IFF interrogator systems (IFF = Identification Friend or Foe), aircraft are quickly and reliably identified by the exchange of coded signals.

With the 2006 World Cup in Germany approaching fast, there are many projects and considerations at EADS for guaranteeing safety and security during this major event. EADS has been giving this subject a great deal of thought and is developing and producing comprehensive system solutions, which can also be used for homeland security.

The order is for both the supply and the integration of the IFF interrogator systems in existing radar installations built in the USA. The first system for the radar installation on the Erbeskopf hill in the Hunsrück region is already due to be delivered and put into operation in this year. The other systems will be integrated into the existing radar installations prior to the World Cup in Germany in order to improve airspace control over Germany – an important contribution to security during the world championship.

“This order will bring German military airspace control right up to date”, said Bernhard Gerwert, Head of EADS Defence Electronics. “The order confirms the leading role that EADS Defence Electronics has in the area of radar identification systems.”

Safety at major events like the World Cup can also be improved by the experience gained in the field of security system technologies. As one of the world’s leading producers and an integrator of digital trunked radio-based systems, EADS enables a reliable, central exchange of information between security forces for internal security, making it possible to reach an immediate decision based on the situation. EADS also offers integrated systems solutions for surveying coastlines and borders as well as protecting property.

EADS Defence & Security Systems, with revenues of about € 5.4 billion in 2004 and roughly 23,000 employees across ten nations, forms the defence and security pillar within EADS. It offers integrated systems solutions to the new challenges confronting armed forces and homeland security units. It is active in the areas of military aircraft, missile systems, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems with manned and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), battlefield management systems, defence electronics, sensors and avionics, and related services.

EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2004, EADS generated revenues of € 31.8 billion and employed a workforce of about 110,000.
