USS KITTY HAWK, Hong Kong (NNS) -- USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63), along with embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5, USS Stethem (DDG 63) and USS Chancellorsville (CG 62), pulled into Hong Kong harbor Nov. 24, commencing a port visit in which Sailors hoped to take advantage of Hong Kong’s world-class shopping and cultural attractions.

“Hong Kong is a terrific port, and the people of Hong Kong are exceptional hosts,” said Capt. Ed McNamee, Kitty Hawk’s commanding officer. "We truly appreciate their friendship and are looking forward to this wonderful port call."

During the visit, Sailors will be able to participate in group events organized by Kitty Hawk’s morale, welfare and recreation (MWR) office.

“There will be friendly basketball games between the ship and local organizations and a golf tournament, as well as special hotel rates and tours of Hong Kong and mainland China,” said Storekeeper Seaman Marcela Frias, of MWR.

The Hong Kong visit will also offer Sailors an opportunity to participate in community service projects sponsored by the ship’s religious ministries department.

“We have nine community service projects scheduled for Hong Kong,” said Senior Chief Religious Program Specialist (SW/AW) Kristy Grayson, religious ministries department leading chief petty officer. “We will be going to places such as the Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children, the Salvation Army and the Hong Kong Vocational Center. We also have the Meals in the Home program, where Sailors can enjoy meals in the homes of Hong Kong families.”

Sailors not going on an MWR tour or a community service project said they, too, were looking forward to the Hong Kong visit.

“I just want to relax and have fun,” said Yeoman 3rd Class Kris Kononowicz, of Kitty Hawk’s Air Department. “I plan to go shopping, eat at a good restaurant and go to a club in the evenings.”

The Kitty Hawk Strike Group is the largest carrier strike group in the Navy and is composed of the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk, CVW 5, Chancellorsville, USS Cowpens (CG 63) and Destroyer Squadron 15.
