Defense Department Report, November 17: Trial in Afghanistan

16 November 2005

U.S. soldiers face military action for alleged treatment of detainees

The U.S. military announced November 17 that it will hold a military court martial in Afghanistan to consider charges against two American soldiers accused of mistreating detainees in their custody.

The soldiers face a variety of charges such as dereliction of duty, conspiracy to maltreat, maltreatment of detainees and assault.  They are accused of hitting two detainees being held in the province of Uruzgan.

The court martial will be held at a future date at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, according to a press release issued by the Combined Forces Command in Afghanistan.

A third soldier faces punishment, but not a court martial, for failing to alert his superiors to the abuse.
