U.S. Says 37 Alleged Insurgents Killed In Western Iraq

14 November 2005 -- The U.S. military says its air strikes have killed some 37 alleged insurgents in the latest phase of an operation in western Iraq.

The military says Operation Steel Curtain entered a new phase today, when U.S. and Iraqi troops moved into the town of Al-Ubaydi, near the Syrian border. A military statement says some 25 alleged insurgents have been captured.

About 2,500 U.S. troops and 1,000 Iraqi soldiers have already fought their way through the neighboring towns of Husaybah and Al-Karabilah, battling with insurgents.

U.S. commanders say the offensive -- started just over a week ago -- aims at rooting out foreign fighters and weapons coming into Iraq.

In Baghdad today, a bomb exploded outside the heavily fortified Green Zone, killing three people. And in the western city of Al-Ramadi, medical sources say six people were killed when a roadside bomb exploded near two coaches.
