At Least 40 Dead in New Iraq Violence

10 November 2005

It has been a deadly day in Iraq, where two bombings have killed at least 40 people and injured dozens more.

The deadliest attack was at a Baghdad restaurant frequented by police and security forces. Officials say a suicide bomber wearing an explosives belt entered the cafe and blew himself up while many patrons were eating breakfast. At least 33 people were killed.

Al-Qaida in Iraq, which is led by Jordanian-born terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, claimed responsibility for the blast in an unverifiable Internet posting.

To the north, in Tikrit, a car bomb exploded outside an Iraqi army recruiting center, killing at least seven people.

Elsewhere, Iraqi soldiers found the bodies of 27 people in the southern Jassan region. They had all been killed execution style.
