November 3, 2005 Release Number: 05-11-04C FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SOLDIER KILLED, ANOTHER INJURED NEAR BALAD BAGHDAD, Iraq – A Soldier from the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division died from wounds sustained when the patrol he was with came under attack by anti-Iraqi forces near Balad Nov. 2. He was attached to with the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division. Another Soldier injured in the attack was transported to a nearby medical facility and treated for his wounds. During the fight, a gunman was quickly killed after throwing a hand grenade at the patrol, and another fled into a nearby building and continued to engage the Soldiers with small arms fire. U.S. Air Force aircraft were called in and dropped two bombs, killing the remaining gunman and ending the fight. The Soldiers’ names are being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.
