Washington -- The United States, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations -- known as the Quartet when dealing with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict -- have condemned the October 26 bombing at a market in Hadera, Israel.
The Quartet has called on Syria to close the Damascus headquarters of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which claimed responsibility for the attack that killed five Israelis and wounded 28.
“The Quartet urges the Syrian government to take immediate action to close the offices of Palestinian Islamic Jihad and to prevent the use of its territory by armed groups engaged in terrorist acts,” said State Department spokesman Sean McCormack, reading from the Quartet’s statement at the October 28 State Department press briefing.
The Quartet urged all parties to exercise restraint and “act decisively" to ensure that terror and violence do not undermine further progress in accordance with the road map.”
The road map peace process envisions a two-state solution to the conflict, with sovereign, independent Israeli and Palestinian states living side by side in peace.
The Quartet conveyed its encouragement and support of the Palestinian Authority as it works to prevent militant groups from acting against the law and undermining its authority.
