ABOARD USS ENTERPRISE, At Sea (NNS) -- USS Enterprise (CVN 65) completed a two-day ammunition on-load Oct. 24, bringing the aircraft carrier one step closer to combat readiness.

Enterprise utilized both connected replenishment (CONREP) and vertical replenishment (VERTREP) with the help of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (HS) 11 to safely bring aboard 1,173 lifts of ammunition from USNS Arctic (T-AOE 8).

Enterprise’s ordnance handling officer Lt. Cmdr. Chuck Ensinger said a lot of preparation led up to this event. This included months of training, inspections and certification. “The guys have been working diligently the last three months,” he said.

Ensinger also said the evolution required the cooperation of several departments to get the job done. Deck Department assisted with the CONREP, Air Department assisted with the VERTREP and the transfer of ordnance, and Supply Department ensured the “red shirts” were kept well-fed throughout the two day evolution.

Now that Enterprise is armed up, Ensinger said the ship is that much closer to taking the fight to the enemy.

“This ship would not be surge ready until you have all the ammunition on board,” Ensigner said. “Without the ordnance, you can’t go fight the fight.”
