SILVERDALE, Wash. (NNS) -- A $39 million renovation to the service pier located on the waterfront of Naval Base Kitsap at Bangor concluded with a formal ribbon cutting Oct. 3 in one of the new support buildings on the pier.
On hand to cut the ribbon was U.S. Congressman Norm Dicks of Washington and Rear Adm. Frank Drennan, commander, Submarine Group 9.
During his remarks, Dicks spoke of his ties to the Bangor community and the role of the service pier in support of USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23).
“Bangor has been a critical part of our nation’s strategic deterrent policy for the past 33 years and is vital to keeping our nation safe," he said. "We know that deterrence does work. We also know that winning the Cold War didn’t eliminate threats to our nation."
"In the current war on terrorism, our nation continues to need a strong Navy and submarine force to deter threats and adapt to new roles," continued Dicks. "I think the Jimmy Carter is an absolutely superb platform to carry on the work of [USS Parche (SSN 683)]. The Navy did a wonderful job of seizing the opportunity to modify Bangor to accommodate the Jimmy Carter. I saw this facility as it was being constructed. I look forward to helping the Navy as a member of Congress and am delighted to be here for this ribbon cutting.”
The service pier was remodeled and extended to accommodate Jimmy Carter, the third submarine of the Seawolf class. Along the pier is a brand-new building designed to support Jimmy Carter and other missions of Submarine Development Squadron 5, which will support Jimmy Carter.
