Sri Lanka-LTTE-EU ban
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) wants Norway to lift the EU travel ban imposed on their organization since September 26.
Upping their ante, the LTTE asked Norway to lift the EU travel ban on its leaders, failing which it threatened to resume war against the Lankan government.
LTTE Political Wing leader S.P. Thamilselvan urged Norwegian Ambassador Hands Brattaskar to make representations with the EU, one of the four-member co-chairs, on their behalf on a priority basis.
The travel ban imposed by the EU prevents LTTE delegations from visiting EU countries. The EU also declared that Sri Lanka's request to include the LTTE in the EU list of proscribed organizations was being actively considered.
President chandrika Kumaratunga's government sought the EU ban immediately after the assassination of former Sri Lankan foreign minister Lakshman Kadirgamar. LTTE has denied any involvement in the killing.
Diplomatic sources said the LTTE should not expect a change in the EU's stance in the near future.
Meanwhile, a retired Norwegian general was in Sri Lanka on Monday to review the Oslo-brokered truce between the government and the Tamil Tiger rebels amid continuing violence.
