Death Toll 10 In Latest Iraq Bomb Attack

1 October 2005 -- Insurgency-fueled violence continued in Iraq yesterday, with at least 10 people killed by a car bomb, one day after coordinated car bomb attacks killed nearly 100 people.

Iraqi police said a car bomb exploded yesterday in a crowded vegetable market in the Shi'ite town of Hilla, south of Baghdad, killing at least 10 people and wounding another 30.

In Al-Basrah, in the south, officials said a police convoy was ambushed on 29 September, killing four policemen.

The attacks came after three car bombings killed nearly 100 people yesterday in the town of Balad, north of Baghdad.

Insurgents have vowed to wreck a planned 15 October referendum on a draft Iraqi constitution.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq has declared war on the Shi'ite majority whose representatives dominate the new government.

Moderate Sunni Arab leaders have also urged their community to reject the draft constitution, saying it will leave them weak compared to Shi'ites and Kurds.
