Israel Widens Offensive Against Palestinian Militants

28 September 2005

Israel is continuing its offensive against Palestinian militants with several air raids in the Gaza Strip early Wednesday.

The Israeli army says the air strikes targeted buildings used for terrorist activities. The attacks knocked out power in Gaza City.

Hours earlier, Israeli troops fired artillery shells at suspected rocket launching sites in northern Gaza, after a rocket slammed into a street in the Israeli town of Sderot late Tuesday.

In the West Bank, Palestinian witnesses say Israeli troops arrested several Hamas and Islamic Jihad activists, raising the number suspects detained this week to nearly 400.

The violence flared after an explosion at a Hamas rally in Gaza last week killed 21 people. The militants blamed Israel and fired rockets into southern Israel. But, a Palestinian Authority forensic report Tuesday said shrapnel from the militant group's own homemade Qassam rockets were found in the bodies of those killed at the rally.

Some information for this report provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
