US Military Says Al-Qaida's No. 2 Man in Iraq Killed
27 September 2005
The U.S. military in Iraq says its forces have killed the second-most wanted al-Qaida terrorist in Iraq during a raid in Baghdad.
Military spokesman, Lt. Col. Steve Boylan says Abu Azzam, also known as the Prince of Baghdad, was killed Sunday. He is a close associate of the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. The U.S. military says Mr. Azzam was the group's operational commander and was responsible for the recent upsurge in violence.
Elsewhere, a suicide bomber attacked a police recruitment center in Baquba Tuesday, killing at least 10 people and injuring more than 25 others.
Also Tuesday, NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer is in Baghdad, where he inaugurated the headquarters of a joint NATO-Iraqi training mission and military academy. NATO plans to expand its role in training Iraqi military officers.
