Southern Thailand Bomb Explosion Kills 2 Policemen
23 September 2005
Thai authorities say a bomb blast in the country's violence plagued south has killed two police officers and wounded another.
Police say the officers were escorting a group of teachers to school at the time of the explosion Friday in Narathiwat province.
Earlier this week in Narathiwat, two marines were beaten to death while being held hostage by local villagers who had blamed them for a shooting incident in a tea shop.
Thailand's defense ministry said an arrest warrant will be issued soon for three villagers suspected of killing the marines on Wednesday.
More than 1,000 people have been killed since Islamic militants began an insurgency in the Muslim-dominated southern provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala in January of 2004.
