Al-Qaeda Announces Suicide Attack Campaign In Iraq

14 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- An Internet claim purportedly from Al-Qaeda in Iraq today announced a nationwide suicide-bombing campaign in Iraq.

The statement was posted on a website frequently used by the group's leader, Abu Mus'ab al-Zarqawi, the most-wanted man in Iraq.

The statement says the campaign is being launched to avenge comrades recently killed by U.S. and Iraqi forces in the northwestern Iraqi town of Tal Afar. The claim could not be authenticated.

Earlier today, a suicide car bomber killed more than 100 people and wounded 162 others in northern Baghdad.

Hadi, a worker who was at the scene of the attack, said: "We gathered and suddenly a car blew up and turned the area into fire and dust and darkness. People ran away [from the blast], there was chaos everywhere."

It was the most severe of a series of attacks in the Iraqi capital today in which at least 12 other people were killed.

Earlier, attackers in military uniforms shot to death 17 handcuffed and blindfolded men in a village north of Baghdad.
