EADS provides hurricane victims with mobile rescue station
EADS
- Fast initial emergency care
- Straightforward deployment possible regardless of infrastructure
Ulm/Munich – 12. September 2005. EADS is assisting in the development of medical care in those areas of the US devastated by Hurricane Katrina with an air-conditioned mobile rescue station including power and water supply. The rescue station developed by the EADS Defence Electronics Business Unit was provided by the German Armed Forces and will be set up in the state of Mississippi. There it will ensure initial emergency care of the highest medical and hygienic standards.
The rescue station will be handed over in the area hit to the relief organisation MEMA ( Mississippi Emergency Management Agency) by EADS. EADS is sending a support team from Germany to monitor the setting-up process and to train medical staff. The entire action is accomplished in collaboration with the German relief organization „Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen e.V.“.
The system which is known as “TransHospital” is deployed in various configurations by the armed forces of Germany, Singapore, Spain, Slovenia and the United Arab Emirates. The German Armed Forces also operate EADS field hospitals during humanitarian missions in Afghanistan and in the Balkans. Moreover, a modified version of the rescue station is being used by the German Navy on its supply vessel “Berlin”.
At the beginning of this year, EADS already helped to supply medical care in the coastal regions of Indonesia devastated by the flood when it provided a mobile rescue station. “It goes without saying that we will also help our American friends in such an emergency”, explained Stefan Zoller, Head of the EADS Defence & Security Systems Division.
The rescue station offers high medical standards, is easy to transport by lorry and can be deployed very quickly. “Since it can be operated regardless of the infrastructure available, we can help people in an emergency quickly“, explained Bernhard Gerwert, Head of EADS Defence Electronics.
EADS Defence Electronics has been developing a prototype for a new medical shelter system for the US Army for months. “The experience we gained during this collaboration is now of great value to this rescue mission”, said Gerhard Henselmann, Head of the EADS Mission Systems Unit.
