At Least Nine Iraqis Killed in Car Bombing
07 September 2005
In Iraq Wednesday, US troops rescued an American contractor kidnapped more than 10 months ago, while a car bomb explosion in the southern city of Basra claimed more Iraqi lives.
Police say at least nine people were killed and several wounded in Basra when a suicide bomber detonated a car full of explosives in front of a busy restaurant.
The usually quiet Shi'ite city has seen a spike in violence in recent days. Earlier Wednesday, four American security guards were killed in a roadside bomb blast there.
Elsewhere, the U.S. military says its troops rescued an American contractor kidnapped last November in Baghdad.
The military says information provided by an Iraqi detainee led to the rescue of Roy Hallums and an Iraqi citizen Wednesday at an isolated farmhouse outside Baghdad. Mr. Hallums is reported in good condition.
