US Jets Destroy 2 Euphrates River Bridges Used by Insurgents

06 September 2005

The U.S. military in Iraq says coalition forces have destroyed two bridges across the Euphrates River in western al-Anbar province to prevent insurgents from using them to move fighters and munitions to major cities.

A military statement said air strikes to destroy the bridges near the town of Karabilah were carried out early this Tuesday morning.

Separately, coalition ground forces raided a safehouse in the town, killing two foreign fighters and detaining three others.

Meanwhile, The Washington Post newspaper is reporting that insurgents linked to al-Qaeda took control of the western city of Qaim, near the Syrian border, in spite of recent coalition military activity in the area.
