Eight Policemen Killed In Afghanistan

4 September 2005 -- Afghan officials say a series of attacks by suspected Taliban rebels have killed eight policemen and wounded an election candidate.

A bomb today blew up outside the home of election candidate Hadidullah Khan in the Helmand Province. The candidate was rushed to hospital where doctors amputated one leg.

In the same province, a district police chief was ambushed and killed along with three officers and one relative.

Yesterday, another three policemen guarding a convoy of trucks transporting goods to U.S. bases were killed in the Zabul Province.

Rebels also attacked a police checkpoint on the main road from the southern city of Kandahar to Kabul, killing one officer.

The attacks are the latest in a spate of guerilla-style assaults in the lead-up to the 18 September legislative elections.
