Army Undertakes Special Planning Effort

The Army announced today it is undertaking special planning to address the needs of the 256th Brigade Combat Team, Louisiana Army National Guard, which will begin its redeployment from Iraq in the forthcoming weeks.

The planning effort is examining housing solutions for its displaced families; mobilization/demobilization rules, policies and regulations; and the array of benefits for returning Soldiers – and how any or all of them should be adapted to address the circumstances confronting this unit as it returns home in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

“These Soldiers have served their country well, and we must serve them and their families as well. The Army recognizes and will meet the unique needs of these returning warriors,” said Brig. Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, chief of Army Public Affairs.

The Army is focused on the welfare of returning Soldiers and civilians in the affected areas and will provide the necessary assistance to the families of those deployed on behalf of the American people.

“This is one Army. And this is what we do in the Army – we take care of our Soldiers and their families,” said Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker, chief of staff of the Army.

Members of the 256th BCT deployed to Iraq in September/October 2004 and will return to Fort Polk, La., over the next few weeks as part of their normal rotation schedule.
