SASEBO, Japan (NNS) -- The mine countermeasures ship USS Patriot (MCM 7) returned to Sasebo Aug. 25, after a short but challenging underway training period that was cut short due to a developing typhoon in the region.

In three weeks underway, Patriot conducted basic and advanced minesweeping evolutions, basic engineering casualty control exercises and general quarters drills. The ship also made port calls to the Japanese cities of Yokosuka and Kure before returning to Sasebo and conducting at-sea training operations.

“Overall, I am very pleased about the way the crew has responded to the challenges that have been put on them,” said Lt. Cmdr. Richard Brawley, Patriot’s commanding officer. “Throughout the demanding training underway, the crew has kept the highest professional standards even when exhausted. I am truly impressed by their stamina.”

In Kure, Brawley visited several key city officials, among them Japanese Adm. Kazunari Doke, commandant of the Kure District of the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force.

“We will take the progress gained from this experience and build on it,” said Brawley. “Judging by the way this crew has responded over the past month, I only foresee continued growth.”

Patriot and USS Guardian (MCM 5), both forward-deployed in Sasebo, serve under Task Force 76, the U.S. 7th Fleet’s mine countermeasures arm in forward-deployed operations.
