South Africa Ends Mediation Role in Ivory Coast
30 August 2005
South Africa says it has concluded its mediation efforts in Ivory Coast and asked the United Nations and the African Union to take over peace efforts in the divided country.
South Africa's Deputy Foreign Minister Aziz Pahad said Tuesday the U.N. Security Council should take action against anyone who is not implementing the peace deal.
Tensions have been rising in Ivory Coast since last week when rebels withdrew their support for elections scheduled for October 30. The vote was mandated under a peace deal mediated by South Africa. Rebels say conditions do not exist to ensure a fair vote.
Rebels have also recently accused South African President Thabo Mbeki of not being partial in his mediation efforts.
