From Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe/Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet Public Affairs

USS MOUNT WHITNEY, Mediterranean Sea (NNS) -- Sailors and Marines from the combined staff of Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet (CNE/C6F) are underway participating in an exercise as Joint Forces Maritime Component Commander Europe (JFMCC EUR).

JFMCC EUR, the maritime arm of U.S. European Command (EUCOM) is conducting a quarterly exercise designed to conduct practical and scenario-specific training to educate themselves on the principles of operational level planning and on the JFMCC organization and purpose.

“The goal of this underway is to train the JFMCC staff in various aspects of their mission through simulated real world scenarios,” said Capt. Red Smith, JFMCC EUR chief of staff. “Training for this exercise includes practice of rapid, responsive planning, refinements of communication technology, and exercising the staff’s transition from their headquarters in Naples to our flagship USS Mount Whitney.”

The ability to transition portions of the combined staff to JFMCC EUR provides a U.S. or NATO commander with greater flexibility and speed when standing up operational capabilities.

CNE and C6F recently combined staffs as part of the ongoing transformation effort throughout Naval Forces Europe. Taking the command structure from bases in London, England, and Gaeta, Italy, the entire staff is now consolidated in Naples, Italy.

The JFMCC EUR staff exercises began August 23 and are scheduled to continue on board USS Mount Whitney (LCC/JCC 20) through the end of the month.
