WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Commands (NAVFAC) Northwest and Southwest opened for business in August, offering more customer-focused engineering, acquisition and public works services for the clients in their region.

These two regional NAVFAC commands provide Navy, Marine Corps and other clients in each region a single entry point for all NAVFAC products and services.

"This is an historic time for NAVFAC," said NAVFAC Commander, Rear Adm. Michael Loose. "We are reshaping our global organizational structure, streamlining our business processes and improving accountability to our clients."

NAVFAC Northwest stood up Aug. 19 with 730 civilian and military members. Formerly known as Engineering Field Activity Northwest, NAVFAC Northwest serves Navy, Marine Corps and other DoD clients across Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska. NAVFAC Southwest, with 3,000 members, was established Aug. 2, consolidating Engineering Field Division Southwest and Navy Public Works Center San Diego. The new command serves clients in California, Arizona and Nevada.

Several NAVFAC component commands were reorganized into facilities engineering commands over the last year. These include: NAVFAC Midwest in Great Lakes, Ill.; NAVFAC Washington in Washington, D.C.; NAVFAC Far East in Yokosuka, Japan; NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic in Norfolk, Va.; NAVFAC Marianas in Guam; and NAVFAC Europe in Naples, Italy.

The organizational and functional change will allow for better communication among staff who manage the planning, design, construction, contingency engineering, real estate, environmental and public works support for Navy shore facilities around the world, providing better service to the client.

Another key component of NAVFAC's reshaping is the integration of the Regional Engineer staff into the facilities engineering commands, allowing each commanding officer to serve as the regional engineer. The commanding officer/regional engineer is each Navy Region's single engineering and acquisition expert, providing more efficient and effective project management and access to all of NAVFAC's worldwide resources.
