EADS delivers innovative external communications system for the UK's ASTUTE nuclear submarine project
* First submarine in the world with this equipment
* Outstanding certification results
Kiel, 22 August 2005
Kiel-based EADS subsidiary Hagenuk Marinekommunikation and its customer, EADS Defence & Security Systems Ltd., UK, are sharing the systems responsibility for three external communications systems (ECS) to be supplied for the UK Royal Navy's ASTUTE class of nuclear submarines. HMS ASTUTE is the first submarine in the world to be equipped with this new system - currently the most advanced external communications system for submarines in the world.
Due to the extremely high security requirements, the communications system was evaluated in advance by the CLEF certification company under contract to the UK Ministry of Defence, achieving certification with outstanding results.
The communications system was installed on schedule on the Command Deck Module of HMS ASTUTE and will enable the submarine crew to transmit voice, data and imagery over all the frequency ranges used for tactical communication. The system is controlled by special software for integrated message handling, which also satisfies the requirement that the entire system be capable of operation by a single person from a central workstation.
EADS is now concentrating on following up this success by winning the contract to supply the ECSs for the second and third ASTUTE class submarines. This is another example of EADS successfully offering innovative products and high-tech solutions for the steadily rising and changing requirements of naval forces.
The Defence and Communications Systems (DCS) Business Unit is the “Systems House” of EADS and is an integrated part of the EADS Defence and Secruity Systems Division (DS).
EADS Defence & Security Systems, with revenues of about € 5.4 billion in 2004 and roughly 23,000 employees across ten nations, forms the defence and security pillar within EADS. It offers integrated systems solutions to the new challenges confronting armed forces and homeland security units. It is active in the areas of military aircraft, missile systems, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems with manned and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), battlefield management systems, defence electronics, sensors and avionics, and related services.
EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2004, EADS generated revenues of € 31.8 billion and employed a workforce of about 110,000.
