19/08/2005 17:58 KIEV, August 19 (RIA Novosti) - Ukrainian police detained an unemployed man in the Crimea for stealing an air defense system.
The Ukrainian Interior Ministry said Friday that the suspect, 43, a local, had stolen a rocket launcher and two Strela-3M air defense systems. Some of the stolen items have been confiscated.
The Strela-3M was found on February 22 at a Ukrainian naval storage facility. The police saw two people trying to break into the facility. When the police ordered them to stop, they dropped their instruments and escaped.
A watchman discovered that the seal had been broken at the gate of a storage facility and a lock was missing from another one.
The police summoned the security chief and the commanders of the military unit. Inventory showed that a launcher was missing, along with two boxes with rockets for the air defense system.
Strela-3M air defense systems are capable of hitting air targets at a distance of about 2 miles.
