82nd Airborne Division deploying in support of OIF
August 18, 2005
FORT BRAGG, N.C. (Army News Service, Aug. 18, 2005) - The 82nd Airborne Division has received deployment orders directing them to deploy a Battalion-sized element in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, has been alerted and begun preparation and training for movement to Iraq.
The 82nd Airborne will be joining forces from Multinational Force-Iraq already in theatre.
The division is deploying an infantry battalion to provide the Combatant Commander the forces he has determined are necessary to support operations in Iraq.
Mission requirements and troop levels are dictated by the security situation on the ground and not influenced by any arbitrary timetable. The infantry battalion will arrive in theater well trained and prepared to perform a wide range of traditional infantry missions and nontraditional missions based on the Combatant Commander's requirements.
The 1st Battalion, 504th PIR has responded to the call from the outset of the Global War on Terror. From July 2002 to January 2003 they deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. They also deployed from September 2003 to April 2004 to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
As America’s Strategic Response Force, the 82nd Airborne Division is trained and ready to deploy anywhere in the world on short notice as required to defend America's interests at home and worldwide.
