15 ambassadors, senior State Department officials unanimously approved
The U.S. Senate confirmed the nominations of 15 ambassadors and senior State Department officials before beginning its annual August recess, Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Richard G. Lugar announced August 1.
The Senate unanimously approved the nominations July 29 of:
- William J. Burns to be ambassador to the Russian Federation
- James P. Cain to be ambassador to Denmark
- Henry A. Crumpton to be coordinator for counterterrorism, with the rank and status of ambassador at large
- Alan W. Eastham Jr. to be ambassador to the Republic of Malawi
- Henrietta Holsman Fore to be under secretary of state for management
- Jendayi E. Frazer to be assistant secretary of state for African affairs
- Karen P. Hughes to be under secretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs, with the rank of ambassador
- Richard Henry Jones to be ambassador to Israel
- Gillian A. Milovanovic to be ambassador to the Republic of Macedonia
- Katherine Hubay Peterson to be ambassador to the Republic of Botswana
- Michael Retzer to be ambassador to the United Republic of Tanzania
- Francis Joseph Ricciardone Jr. to be ambassador to the Arab Republic of Egypt
- Josette S. Shiner to be under secretary of state for economic, business and agricultural affairs
- Kristen Silverberg to be assistant secretary of state for international organization affairs
- William Robert Timken Jr. to be ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany
