BAE Systems awarded contract to update ADAWS
28 Jul 2005 | Ref. 141/2005
The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded at £7.6m contract to BAE Systems to upgrade the (Action Data Automation Weapons System) ADAWS Command System's IFF tracking and Link 16 functionality. The contract will run until July 2007.
The upgrade will be fitted to Batch 2 and Batch 3 Type 42 destroyers; the aircraft carriers HMS Illustrious and HMS Ark Royal; and the amphibious ships HMS Albion, HMS Bulwark and HMS Ocean, thirteen ships in total.
ADAWS is combat proven in anti-air warfare, aircraft control, missile direction, naval gunfire support and anti-submarine warfare. The new contract, an addition to an existing integrated post and design services contract, will provide a target data extraction capability for the Interrogator Friend or Foe (IFF) system and improved Link 16 functionality.
The IFF data will be integrated with the ADAWS combat management system, giving an IFF tracking capability. The IFF tracks will be combined with tracks from the air and surface surveillance radars and tracks reported by the data link. This will significantly enhance situational awareness by supplying improved track position, velocity and identity information to the operator.
The additional Link 16 functionality builds on the Data Link interface in the current ADAWS system to provide the ship's Command Team with Anti-Air Warfare Control and Aircraft Direction capabilities via the Data Link.
