More Blasts In Afghanistan

25 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Three Afghan policemen were wounded in a bomb blast today in the Afghan capital, Kabul.

The blast occurred on the main road leading to Kabul's airport and damaged a UN vehicle. Police said the bomb was set off by remote control.

Also today, the U.S. military said in a statement that six of its soldiers were wounded in an attack on 24 June in the Asadabad District of Kunar Province. A roadside bomb exploded as a U.S. convoy drove past. Unidentified attackers then opened fire on the soldiers before being driven off.

In yet another development, the U.S. military said U.S. and Afghan forces have captured seven suspected militants whom authorities believe to be responsible for another attack on 24 July in Helmand Province.

Afghanistan has witnessed a surge in violence in recent months ahead of legislative elections scheduled for September.
