Nepal's political parties, agitating against the royal takeover, have asked Maoist rebels to express commitment to multi-party democracy and human rights in order to create a conducive atmosphere for initiating dialogue, reports Press Trust of India.
"We have termed as positive Maoist Chairman Prachanda's recent statement asking to form a talks team to initiate a dialogue," Nepal Communist Party-UML standing committee member Jhalanath Kanal said.
However, they must first take concrete steps to build confidence for initiating a dialogue.
Top leaders of seven political parties, who met at the Nepalese Congress office in Lalitpur district yesterday, asked the Maoists to take some "fundamental steps" before initiating a dialogue which included putting an end to harassment of political activists, ensure smooth operation of schools, not to obstruct anti-King agitations and express clear and institutional commitment to multi-party polity and human rights.
Nepalese Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala and CPN-UML General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal were among the top leaders who attended the meeting.
"There is a need to make a broader alliance with other political forces to intensify the fight against absolute monarchy," Kanal told PTI.
The Maoists should express commitment towards multi-party democracy and peaceful resolution to the present crisis and take concrete steps to prove their credibility, he said.
