EADS equips German frigates with MIDS terminals

* First order from the Navy for MIDS systems
* Requirement for network-centric operations management

Unterschleissheim/Ulm, 25 July 2005

For the first time EADS is equipping frigates of the German Navy with the Multifunctional Information Distribution System (MIDS). As the company announced on Monday, EADS Defence Electronics has signed a contract for the delivery of eight MIDS LVT (Low Volume Terminals) for frigates.

The “LINK 16 IT system for F122 frigates” project is a major requirement for the planned adaptation of capabilities for command & control and weapon deployment systems for German naval frigates. Within NATO, the LINK 16 system allows tactical images of the area to be exchanged in real time with platforms of other branches of the armed forces and multinational partners. Bernhard Gerwert, Head of EADS Defence Electronics, commented: “This exchange of images of the area by means of the MIDS data link system is a requirement for network-centric operations capabilities. In the field of high-frequency technology EADS Defence Electronics actively assists its customers in the transformation of military and security affairs.”

Under the MIDS program, the data link is also being integrated in many US combat and transport aircraft, ground vehicles and naval ships. It provides the capabilities for setting up a data communications network between various military units, therefore allowing networked operations to be carried out. MIDS enables the establishment of a comprehensive situation picture in near real time and improves the cooperation of multinational forces. EADS Defence Electronics was chosen as supplier for MIDS power amplifiers in the face of strong competition from US companies, based on the outstanding precision and reliability of the equipment previously supplied. Up to now, EADS Defence Electronics has delivered more than 430 MIDS power amplifiers to the US market. In addition EADS Defence Electronics is also part of the quattronational EuroMIDS consortium which is responsible for the introduction of the MIDS data link system to the NATO members Germany, France, Italy and Spain.

EADS Defence Electronics is a leading supplier of radar and avionics systems and electronic warfare equipment and is an integrated part of the EADS Defence & Security Systems Division (DS). DS, with revenues of about € 5.4 billion in 2004 and roughly 24,000 employees across ten nations, forms the defence pole within EADS. It offers integrated systems solutions to the new challenges confronting armed forces and homeland security units. It is active in the areas of military aircraft, missile systems, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems with manned and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), battlefield management systems, defence electronics, sensors and avionics, and related services.

EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2004, EADS generated revenues of € 31.8 billion and employed a workforce of about 110,000.
