Coalition Forces catch terrorists, foil bomb attack

Multi-National Force-Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Task Force Baghdad Soldiers detained two men shortly after finding an improvised explosive device in Baghdad's Furat district at around noon on July 23.

The bomb, found near the side of a dirt road, appeared to be a 5-foot-square black box with nails pointing upward and green and red wires attached.

The Soldiers called in a team of explosives experts to investigate and stopped a man driving near the bomb site. After listening to the driver's story, the Soldiers were suspicious. The driver told the Soldiers that another man living in a nearby house could verify his alibi.

The unit accompanied the driver to the house. The man living in the home asked the Soldiers for water and gave the unit permission to search the house.

The Soldiers proceeded to search and found four large pipe bombs, black powder, bomb-detonating devices and a fully-loaded AK-47 rifle. A thorough search of the house revealed seven protective masks with filters, night vision goggles, an empty rocket tube and three spent artillery shells. The unit also found an explosives detector, three pistol holsters, several dozen terrorist manuals, and a large box of nails which were the same as the ones found earlier on the roadside bomb.

Both the driver and the man living in the house were taken into custody for questioning.
