ABOARD USS BOXER (NNS) -- The U.S. Coast Guard’s Pacific Tactical Law Enforcement Team (PACTACLET) embarked aboard USS Boxer (LHD 4) July 8 during the in-port phase of exercise Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT).

Four members from PACTACLET and Boxer’s Ship’s Self Defense Force (SSDF) came together during CARAT to conduct training scenarios focused on visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) techniques.

CARAT is an annual series of bilateral military exercises between the United States and various Southeast Asian countries designed to enhance interoperability between services.

“From a force protection standpoint, this is a great opportunity for both the Coast Guard and Boxer,” said Master-at-Arms 1st Class Dean Sayre. “We will all benefit from the training that we can provide to each other.”

Through training evolutions, service members from Malaysia and the United States will develop key cooperative skills to preserve regional stability as a team if the need ever arose.

“It is important for us to come together as one force to train and become better," said Coast Guard Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class James Green. "Because of the nature of the world today, we have to be prepared as a nation to work with partners to respond to any given situation and keep the sea lanes open.”

The CARAT exercise involves more than 1,600 U.S. Sailors and Coast Guardsmen, along with several members of the Royal Malaysian Navy.
