KEMAMAN, Malaysia (NNS) -- USS Boxer (LHD 4), commanded by Capt. Thomas J. Culora, departed Kemaman, Malaysia, July 12 after a four-day visit for the in-port phase of exercise Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT). While here, Sailors took time to experience the local culture.

While some chose to stay close to the ship and enjoy a D.J., food, and shop with vendors who offered souvenirs and products right on the pier, others made their way to busy malls and resorts, and took part in tours.

“Malaysia was a great experience,” said Machinist's Mate 3rd Class Michael J. Dugan. “I was able to buy a lot of cool things in the mall for great prices.”

In addition to enjoying the offerings of Malaysia, crew members also took time out to work with their hosts in the community.

“While it is always important that we as a military demonstrate our vigilance, presence and our ability to secure safe sea lanes,” said Boxer Command Master Chief CMDCM Daniel Benitez, “it is just as important to let the nations that host us know that we can give a helping hand when needed.

"Our Sailors are always excited to be involved in community relations projects," he added. "It is one of the things that make us such a great Navy.”

CARAT, an annual series of bilateral military exercises between the United States and various Asian nations, is designed to improve military readiness and share knowledge and capabilities.
