KEMAMAN, Malaysia (NNS) -- USS Boxer (LHD 4) hosted a reception for more than 75 Malaysian service members here July 10.

The reception provided an opportunity for Americans and Malaysians to get acquainted before the ship and more than 150 Malaysian soldiers left the pier to begin the underway phase of exercise Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Malaysia July 12.

“It’s our way of sharing knowledge about Boxer equipment and capabilities with our exercise partners,” said Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 25’s Aviation Machinist’s Mate 1st Class David Redick.

When the guests arrived on board, they were given a tour of the ship that included up-close looks at an MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter, and were treated to appetizers and cake in the wardroom.

“It was great meeting and interacting with the Navy and Army from Malaysia. Everyone had a good time and enjoyed the reception,” said Lt. Derrick Kingsley, Boxer's safety officer. "It will be great working with the Malaysians during CARAT."

CARAT is an annual series of bilateral military exercises between the United States and the armed forces of several Southeast Asian nations, designed to improve military readiness and interoperability with countries involved in mission areas of mutual benefit.
