Second Phase Of Operational Flight Programme Is Released For Hawk MK128
15 Jul 2005
The development of the RAF's new Hawk advanced jet trainer (AJT), the Mk128, has taken a significant step forward with the release of a major new software package.
Operational Flight Programme (OFP) 2 represents the second of six phases of development software for the Hawk Mk.128. Each phase extends the functionality of the new generation aircrafts mission system by introducing additional capabilities to the new open architecture mission computer, which has been developed with significant capacity for growth to fulfil current, and future, fast jet training requirements.
The main feature is an extensive attack training capability, consisting of both air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons functions. Using a weapons simulation facility this software allows the aircraft to perform aiming accuracy assessments without the need to release live weapons. It also enables the aircraft to use short range infra-red missiles and simulated guns while engaging in simulated air-to-air combat
The new generation Hawks mission system consists of two new open architecture mission computers. The second unit allows the two cockpits of the aircraft to operate independently, with each being used for different purposes to fulfil the required training need. Instructors in the rear seat can monitor the trainee in the front, if required, or configure the system for their own requirements. The second computer also provides an extensive back-up capability should it be required in the event of any failure.
In addition to the flight trials, OFP2 will support the production acceptance test flying on the first RAF Hawk Mk128 (RT001), which will commence its flight test programme in the near future.
Flight trials for a further development programme for a new digital map, full autopilot capability and a traffic collision and avoidance system (TCAS) will commence in September.
