Leading politicians in Nepal have sought the involvement of the international community, including India, in initiating a dialogue with Maoists in the Kingdom and help bring them to the political mainstream.

This was conveyed by them to Lakhdar Brahimi, special advisor to United Nations' Secretary General Kofi Annan, who is currently in Kathmandu to help find a solution to the ten-year-long insurgency, which has plagued the country for over 12 years and claimed more than 12,000 lives.

Former Prime Minister and Nepali congress President Girija Prasad Koirala told Brahimi that India's role is greater in resolving the Maoist problem and added that besides this support from the international community was also necessary in the matter, Suresh Chalise, Koirala's political Advisor said in Kathmandu.

Koirala made it clear to Brahimi that third party involvement was necessary to end the present political crisis, as the three actors of the present crisis: the Maoists, the political parties and the King all are in deep crisis of confidence, according to Chalise.

Nothing can be achieved even if the King, the Maoists and the seven -party alliance come together, said Koirala, who is currently leading the seven-party agitation to oppose the royal takeover, adding "The international community, including Indians, must cooperate in this regard".
